Scotts Valley Auto Repair

We were in San Luis Obispo a few weeks ago. On the way home to Scotts Valley, the transmission started acting up. It would not upshift past 2nd gear so we had to drive up 101 at 20 miles an hour. Immediately took it to Brad at SVT and he found that a bushing was worn and was preventing hydraulic pressure from building up to make the transmission up shift. While no one, it seems, will rebuild a transmission any more, and a new one would be almost $7000 with a 9 week lead time, Brad decided to pull it and just replace the bushing. No problem, he does it all the time because it is a simple operation. Put it back together, reinstalled it, and it still would not work properly. Once again he pulled it out, and starting replacing various parts. Brad will not give up. Nothing worked so after two weeks, he decided to try to locate a used transmission to install. He found one in Utah. It arrive in two days and was installed. Works great. Our car is a 2002 Toyota Camry so because it is 21 years old, parts are not readily available. And we found out that parts that are available are used - with no inspection or quality control. So you pays your money and takes your chances. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. But, once again, Brad and the SVT team came though for us!

I’ll start by saying that we can all agree any sort of car trouble or repairs is already stressful to begin with, right? Well, having your alternator belt quiet literally shred into pieces at 9pm at night while you’re driving home is even worse. At that time, we did not know what it was but we knew I couldn’t drive my car any further. My car was taken by tow up to Scotts Valley Transmission & Auto Care and dropped off that same night. By 2pm the next day I had a message from Brad letting me know the repairs were done and I could come pick up my car. I was in shock. Here I thought it would take days to do the repairs and I’d be without a vehicle leaving me in a tight spot. Brad not only reassured me they would do everything they could to figure out exactly what needed to be done but would also be mindful of the need for me to have a vehicle back in a timely manner. I’m so impressed by this shop from start to finish. It’s hard to come across honest, efficient and reliable car repair shops nowadays and I can confidently say, I have now found my go-to!

These guys, Brad in particular, saved us thousands of dollars. The dealer told us we needed a new transmission at a cost of about $13,000! We called SVT for a second opinion. Brad told us that flushing the transmission often solved the kind of problems we described and suggested we bring it in. We did. He checked the transmission fluid and told us it was fatigued and that for a very modest cost he could fix it. We gave him the go ahead and sure enough, it solved our problem. No new transmission required! Yet another example of why dealers have such shady reputations. We were very impressed with Brad's analysis and pinpoint diagnosis. It's so nice to find someone so knowledgeable and honest. We highly recommend SVT and will definitely use them again.
